After last week, it was a well deserved gorgeous morning in the basin.

Both sides of the river got hit in the past week.


All MIT races got cancelled this weekend, so MIT crews raced each other on Sunday morning.



Meanwhile BU showed support for the victims of Monday's bombing.

As did Stanford lightweights.

HVL and Navy Lights battling it out in the windy rainy basin this morning. And probably pretty happy about it!

MIT students gather to pay their respects at the makeshift memorial for MIT Police Officer Sean Collier, several hours after the second of his suspected murderers was apprehended.

And this was a nice tribute, too.

Thinking of my alma mater today. The campus police have been a part of the MIT community, and have been first responders so many times, for incidents ranging from someone having a little too much to drink, to serious injuries on the athletic fields, to routine parking tickets (never gotten one). There is no fence between MIT and the City of Cambridge, and there will never be one. Unfortunately, that means that occasionally the MIT police respond to calls that are far more serious than the ones described above. Thank you Officer Sean Collier for being there, and keeping MIT safe, my thoughts go out to you and your family.

Well, topping yesterday's post is going to be hard, so I am not even going to try. So instead, here's 27 of the thousands of people who laced up their running shoes, picked up their oars, hopped on their bike, and went back on Tuesday morning. Because they are not scared. Because whoever did this should be.

The very astute among you will immediately notice that this is not, in fact my Boston Marathon finishers medal(it's from the BAA 1/2). There's a good reason for that. The actual medal is at a small cemetery in Archbald, PA. I left it there for Margaret, who always dreamed of running the Marathon, but never got to do it. I signed up to run the marathon in February of 2009, just months after Margaret passed away from brain cancer. I ran for Livestrong, because Livestrong helped us during her battle with cancer. I trained as hard as I could. I had a great first half of the race. I blew up, and had a terrible second half. But even knowing that I was very far from my goal time, I remember how elated I felt when I crossed that finish line. And I know that every single person who crossed that line will never forget it. We all took very different paths to the starting line in Hopkinton. But all of us were taking the same one for the next 26.2 miles. To think that someone would plant a bomb at the destination of our journey, to try to hurt people who had already suffered so much just to get there, and the supporters who make Boston the special race that it is, is just so heinous that it defies description. My thoughts and prayers go out to all those hurt during this tragedy, and to all the first responders and medical personnel who worked tirelessly to save all of those who were hurt.

Not watching the race today, but fast thoughts to all those who have come from close and far away. Especially Kevin and Kelly!


One must never forget that it is important to stop and smell the flowers. Even if you are a turkey on Mass Ave. And even if you are going to eat said flowers later.
